Project: Easy Rotating Solar Oven
Lesson Plans Areas and Titles-
Engineering: All Geared Up
Mathematics: Gathering Jumping Jacks Data 1 and 2 and Volume of Rectangular Prisms
Science: Earth Atmosphere Jigsaw, Greenhouse Effects and Heat Energy and Insulators
Literacy: The Sun Keeps Time, The Stories We Tell and Creating a Model of the Sun
Introduction: All students have some understanding of the “sun”. As an ever present body in our sky students bring to learning about the “sun” prior knowledge. Based on both student needs and expected content, teachers can choose from a variety of content area lessons to expand or deepen students understanding of their “sun”.
Engineering: The Easy Rotating Solar Oven sits on a base that consists of a turn-table gear system. This lesson created by Mike Cain to introduce students to gears and gear systems.
Mathematics: These data collecting lessons are directed at providing students will foundational experiences in collecting, recording and graphing data from an experiment on energy. In this case energy created by the students themselves. The lesson on volume relates to the construction of the oven versa the reflector component of our Easy Rotation Solar Oven. These lessons were created by Jeff Tousignant to support students understanding of mathematical concepts needed in engineering a new/modified product.
Science: These lessons apply directly to students understanding of the “sun” as an energy source (ie the ability of the sun to cook food or heat water) and the need to insulate a solar oven to retain heat energy provided by the “sun”. Created by Gino Marchetti to support students understanding of the science of the sun’s energy.
Literacy: The “sun” has played a significant role in diverse cultures and communities across planet earth. It’s constant presences in the lives of humans across time and humans need to explain what we see and experience. These lesson created by Anne Lewerenz to support students understanding of the sun’s role in creation stories and the idea of time.
